How does a Rimfire Bolt Shim work? The actual head space is in the recessed face of the bolt. Shimming between the two bolt halves ensures the bolt is up snug against the breech. If the bolt has excessive clearance at the breech it can to cause misfires and light strikes, or simply inconsistent accuracy. When a Production Rifle is assembled, a bit of extra room or excess tolerance can be left, and this slight variable can affect accuracy. When the bolt action rifle’s bolt locking surfaces become worn increases in the headspace can cause light firing pin strikes, poor ignition (misfires), looseness of the bolt, and loss of accuracy.
Proper Adjustment of the Bolt / Breech with Our Shims may Increase Accuracy
Factory fitting of the barrel into the receiver can also leave excess clearance between the bolt and breech.
Shims can also be used for adjusting after Re-Barreling.
If you are getting misfires and light strikes shimming the bolt may be a good way to solve it.

Lance, My 1981 BRNO No. 2 was scattering shots last week. I’m just back from the range where it liked your .003 shim well enough to put 11 hits in the red at 200 yds! That’s the second week in a row that your exciting contributions to our sport have shown extraordinary results! Thanks Again, Craig
TriggerShims was asked by Gunsmith Jason Lowe ~ Lowey Products Australia to make shims for this bolt, and We Appreciate His Measurements, Photo's and Field Testing!
Lance, I tried different shims and combinations of shims. I finally settled on .005". This gives me a slight open and close resistance. My group size shrunk to half the grouping I used to get. Not a benchrest grade group but a very respectable minute of squirrel.
Thanks for the CZ shims, Howard in the Great White North

Mike from PA Writes:
Lance, just a note to share the joy :-)
your shims in my CZ 457 AT-ONE cut my groups (5 groups of 5 shots including cold bore shot) from 4 inch total of all five groups to 2.065 total of all five groups, almost in half. The CZ needed .007" of shims. It was little hard to open the bolt after firing so I backed down to 006, using a 004 and 002. Still shot a 7/16, a 5/16, a 3/8, a 7/16, a 5/8. Than I put 9 shots in 9/16 at 50 yds. I used to be sure of a 3/4 inch group, with an few 1/2 inch groups. I can't wait to see what I get at 100 yds and 150 yds ~ Thank you for your product!
Craig from NC Writes:
Lance, My new CZ 457 Jaguar with it’s 28” non-MTR barrel was shooting very respectably at 200yds but not quite up to the performance of my two MTR guns. I tried one of your .003" Bolt Shims but couldn’t close the bolt. But, the .002" shim created a new gun and shooting experience!! The very first outing yielded a 3/4 MOA group at 200 Yds all in a 2” bullseye square. Not bad for an 83 year old shooter.
From Adam in FL:
I would like to Thank You. The CZ 457 bolt shim kit produced SK Match results from the CCI Standard ammo I was using at 50 yards. I couldn’t be more pleased and you can be assured that I will spread the word in my circle!
Lance - Thanks for the shims. I was at the point this rifle was going for sale, it’s amazing what .006" worth of shims did for the accuracy. Thanks so much and great response and great parts. ~ Joel in Indiana
Hello Lance, Thank You for the quick service. I am in Sudbury Ontario and received my CZ Bolt Shims in 8 days. A great little product, who knew that something so minor would have such an effect on accuracy, my groups have shrunk by 1/3. I would definitely recommend these to others.
Thanks Again, Rick

~ VF457EE Extractor Reviews ~
Hi Lance, These CZ457 Volquarten parts work great! Since Volquartsen's extractor does not have half of the extractor hook and pusher end filed off they hold a cartridge securely without spitting it out as was an issue with my original CZ parts. My CZ extractor set dropped every empty case on top of my single shot magazine without ejecting it which made the single shot mag useless. This problem has been fixed by the Volquarten parts. Empty cases now extract and eject flawlessly. Some CZ owners might be concerned that since the bottom of the Volquarten hooks do not have a radius filed into them they might not allow cartridges to feed well out of the magazine but I have experienced no problems at all with feeding.
Bottom line: I really like the Volquartsen extractor set! ~ Jack
Hi Lance, Just wanted to tell you the CZ 455 extractors I purchased were finally installed in my CZ 455 with it’s 17 HMR barrel along with a .005 bolt shim to reduce the head space from .051 to .047. I went through 150 rounds of 17 HMR, three different manufacture (CCI, Hornady & Federal) with no problem, extracting every empty case as well as a few live rounds to see if they would extract, no problem.
Your idea along with Volquartsen Expertise make for a very good product, an extractor that works! ~ William in PA

LANCE'S TECH TIP:
Rimfire Bolt Shim Installation
~ A General Guide ~
Rimmed Cartridges use the thickness of the cartridge rim for head-spacing.
.22 Rimfires Headspace on the Case Rim, and the actual head space is in the recessed face of the bolt.
Generally Speaking there is extra room left in production guns between the Bolt and Breech to accommodate a wide variety of ammunition with varying rim thicknesses
You should first measure the depth of your bolt face pocket to insure it meets SAAMI minimum depth.
Shimming between the two bolt halves ensures the bolt is seating the cartridge up gently against the breech with your chosen brand of ammunition.
You can use our color coded numbered shims like a gauge to find the when the bolt face touches the barrel breech face, and then calculate where you want to be with your bolt headspace depth and rim thickness measurements.
I cannot tell you which shim best works with your rifle, you decide that yourself by fitting and feel and
by shooting.
Installing Bolt Shims requires fitting by hand, and checking with the Bolt installed in the Rifle, and Locked Down -
you do not measure with the Bolt out of the Rifle.
To establish the Bolt/Breech fit, shims are installed and fitted on an empty chamber.
If possible it may give you a better feel if you leave the extractors off some rifles while fitting shims.
Start with a 4 or 5 Pak of shims, install the .0015" or .002" thinnest shim and see how your bolt closes,
if it seems to close as normal, then continue to install each thicker shim until the bolt starts to close harder than normal.
At the point where your bolt begins to close hard, that was the amount of slack that was in your bolt,
measured by whatever shim or shims combined were needed to bring the bolt up tight to the breech.
Now it is best to remove that shim, and step back one number, example would be if a .005" Red shim causes the bolt handle to close harder than normal,
then take it out and install a .004" Purple.
If you have to force or put undue stress on your bolt to close it, you should reduce the number of shims.
You will generally only use 1 of the 4 or 5 shims in the package, but you can stack shims together if needed.
When you have the correct shim installed, your bolt should close normally or just (ever-so) slightly tighter than normal.
If the bolt closes slightly tight, it is best to back up one step, remove .001"
Put a very small drop of oil on the shim.
Now you can go to the range and with the barrel pointed in a safe direction, once again check fit with your favorite ammo.
Due to variations in rim thickness, you may have to reduce the thickness of shims, remember you have already removed all the excess headspace from the bolt/breech,
so now the only thing to do is remove thickness (shims) if / as needed to get to your sweet spot or required headspace for the rim thickness of your favorite cartridge.
For Longest Shim Life use a drop of oil or a (very small amount of) grease on your shim.
If you have to force or put undue stress on your bolt to close it, you should reduce the number of shims.
A minimum of clearance should be maintained, while maintaining proper headspace. Do not put undue stress on the bolt by shimming too tightly as it is unnecessary!
At no time do you want to force the bolt to close, did I explain that clearly?
If you have any question, use a headspace gauge to check for proper headspace.
Bolt Shims have in many instances cured light strikes.
Will they help with Accuracy? Don't take my word for it,

Just a friendly note on the bolt shims I purchased and installed. My 5 shot group went from dime size at 50 yds to everyone touching and not being able to count individual holes.

Unsolicited Testimonial:
Lance,
I simply wanted to say thank you for providing Bolt Shims. My first one installed was on my Bergara B-14 22 Trainer. I won the club season matches in 2022. It's more accurate now than my winning season. After seeing an improvement, in an already accurate rifle, I've shimmed my Bergara Shooting Rimfire barreled action, two CZ 457, my 2020 Springfield, and my my 54 Annie. The Anschutz allowed for 5th place in the IR 50/50 factory class last year. I shimmed it yesterday. The common fliers were less frequent and overall consistency was improved. A noticeable improvement was seen in all the rifles.
Thanks again for offering a great product ~ Rob in NC

Quote from Kurt's Article ~ How Bolt Shims Work to Improve CZ-457 Accuracy
"It is no secret that headspace plays a huge role in rifle accuracy. On rimmed cartridges, such as the 17 HMR, .22 LR, and 22 Mag, the headspace is measured off the thickness of the cartridge rim. The tighter the headspace, the more consistent the cartridge will be positioned in the chamber, and the more consistent it will ignite the powder. Accuracy is a direct by-product of consistency and repeatability."
Lance, I received my shim pack in perfect condition. Well packaged and very fast shipping. They are hands-down the best shims I’ve ever used. Thank you for a great product at a fair price.

Mr. Shively, I received my order today and had a chance to install the shim and test fire. I have never really been happy with the accuracy results from my CZ 457 MTR..... until now. I am amazed at what a difference such a simple adjustment makes.
I tried 3 shims and settled on the middle one. This rifle has gone from a mediocre shooter, with regular flyers, to a one hole tack driver. It is now in Anschutz territory. Thank you again for a great product! ~ Ralph

CZ457 .22 Bolt Disassembly and Reassembly
TECH TIP REVIEW:
CZ 455 Varmint Tacticool with TriggerShims.com Bolt Shims
Lance, your shims are by-far the best bang for the buck in terms of accuracy improvement. I bought a CZ 455 Tacticool and it seemed to like SK Rifle Match but was still very inconsistent. Like most CZ owners, I started with a trigger spring, then bedding. Still no substantial improvement. I upgraded the trigger guard and tried varying baseplate torque values.
Again, no substantial gains. Then I read about your site at Rimfire Central and decided to give your product a try. I went to my local outdoor range, added the .004" shim while at the shooting table and loaded 5 rounds
My 50 yard groups shrunk from +1.5 MOA to sub 1/2 MOA! The enclosed (target) photo is result, the upper-left was the fouling group then it settled-in! Conditions were 3-7mph wind, 98% humidity, 78 degrees @50yds.
Your product is seriously underrated and unknown by most. I guarantee all of my future shooting conversations will include the impact your products have on accuracy.
Sincerely, Fernando in AL
TECH TIP REVIEW:
CZ 457 Failure To Extract
Lance, I’m happy to write a review on the shims that I received. I was having trouble with my CZ 457. It’s a custom build with a Bartlein barrel. It shoots lights out, but I couldn’t get it to shoot more than 60-70 rounds without having a failure to extract, followed by multiple per magazine. I called the builder, and they said to try new ammo. Well, I was already shooting Lapua Center X, and bought 5,000 rounds of it, so I wasn’t about to switch that easy. I have over 1,500 rounds through the gun and it still jams. Yesterday, lost an NRL22 match due to 3 FTEs in one stage that crushed my score. I was fed up with the rifle and ordered a new Proof barrel. On that same day, I received your shims. I found that I can fit a full .007 shims before the bolt was stiff. After I backed it down to the .005 shim, I took it to the range and was able to shoot 350 rounds without a single failure to extract! Definitely cancelling that new barrel! Your shims have saved me $600 and hours of work breaking in a new barrel. Thanks for the great simple product and the easy instructions. I will definitely recommend you to any others having this same problem. Chris in AZ
Customer IAN from New Zeland writes about his Ruger American® Rimfire Long-Range
Good Morning Lance and Tammy,
I have decided to write a small message to regarding my experiences with your shim kit.
I had purchased a Ruger American .22 Long Range and to say the accuracy was poor was an understatement. Nothing I did helped much.
I did the bedding, Action screw tension, the barrel crown, the trigger, one item at a time with extensive ammunition testing each time to find something it liked.
My CZ’s even with ammunition they didn’t like still outshot it.
Then I saw the Youtube video by Mr Revolver Guy from Day at the Range and thought ok, lets try the headspace and if that doesn’t work, I will sell it as it’s a dog.
I followed the easy instructions and straight away the groups tightened and also it started accepting ammunition it had sprayed around the targets before, every group tightened.
Like all 22LR it still has it’s preferences but all the groups are now touching at 50 yards.
My thanks to you both,
Regards Ian
D in Canada Sends His Before and After Targets
100 Yards with his CZ 452 American
Good Afternoon Mr. Shively, I just wanted to thank you for your excellent service and providing an equally excellent product. My shims arrived in short order and I was able to put them to the test. My groups shooting modestly priced ammo improved dramatically in my CZ 452 American, a rifle that I have been shooting with in Silhouette matches for over 14 years. It was up until now that I have been opting for more expensive Eley for matches, and with shortages in lots, finding difficulty with the 77 and 100 meter targets. I expect to see improvements in my scores and a better enjoyment of match days thanks to your product. Please accept my gratitude and Best Wishes to you and Tammy, D in Canada
10/22 Targets
Our Ruger 10/22 Trigger Shim Kits are used by Hunters and Competitive Shooters alike.
The difference made with our shims is a small part of an overall trigger job, but the difference can be as much as 1/2# Reduction in Pull Weight simply with shims.
One Important Key to Good Shooting is a Good Trigger!
Customer Rickey in North Carolina writes;
Lance, took my 10/22 with rebuilt trigger to the range today and ran 5 different ammos through it, see attached photos. The trigger job using your TriggerShims shims and the Wolff springs did wonders for shrinking my group sizes, .231” average for 5 different ammos ain’t bad, all groups are 5 shots at 50 yards. Thanks again for a great product/service!!! Rickey

Have You Tried a Rim Gauge?
Link to Raven Eye Custom Rim GaugesCZ Damaged Bolt Shim
Question: My CZ 457 Bolt Shim is damaged or broken, why?
Answer: Hard to tell, very unusual to have a damaged shim in a 457
unless it is simply too tight, too much pressure is being applied to the shim, even the thinnest shim properly installed will last several thousand rounds.
Did you check the initial headspace? What was it?
What rim thickness are you using?
I wish I could help but without measuring the headspace and rims to know what amount we are dealing with, it's not even an educated guess.
I can tell you that it is very unusual with such a wide cross-section area shim, and it rarely happens in any shim I sell for any or all models.
We know from testing that a properly fitted thin shim like the CZ455 can last over 6,000 roulds
Have you looked for burrs, rough spots etc?
I sell thousands of these each year, but I only see this once in a great while,
usually from not measuring and using a shim making it too tight.
Not all guns can use bolt shims, it is possible that the gun is tight to begin with, or you are trying to compress the rim,
until you measure it one cannot know.
Shims are only to eliminate excess space, not put any pressure on the rim.
The best thing to do is read above Tech Tips and start from scratch;
If you have this problem and did not measure headspace, my guess would be too tight....
