Bolt Shims

How does a Rimfire Bolt Shim work? The actual head space is in the recessed face of the bolt. Shimming between the two bolt halves ensures the bolt is up snug against the breech. If the bolt has excessive clearance at the breech it can to cause misfires and light strikes, or simply inconsistent accuracy. When a Production Rifle is assembled, a bit of extra room or excess tolerance can be left, and this slight variable can affect accuracy. When the bolt action rifle’s bolt locking surfaces become worn increases in the headspace can cause light firing pin strikes, poor ignition (misfires), looseness of the bolt, and loss of accuracy.

Factory fitting of the barrel into the receiver can also leave excess clearance between the bolt and breech. Shims can also used for adjusting after Re-Barreling If you are getting misfires and light strikes shimming the bolt may be a good way to solve it.

TriggerShims was asked by Gunsmith Jason Lowe ~ Lowey Products Australia to make shims for the Anschutz 54 bolt, and We Appreciate His Measurements, Photo's and Field Testing!

Anschutz 54 Older Action Bolt Shims

Lowey Writes;
Hi Lance, You may get questions from Anschutz owners about the spring loaded section on their bolt that pushes on the shim.... I ran this through very strongly and multiple rifles, the shim will change shape and have the indent for the spring loaded section but it never failed and is working perfectly in our club rifle (this rifle gets abused more than it gets looked after so it is the perfect testing ground)

TriggerShims Bolt Shims can be used as a measuring device and an adjustment tool if needed, shims are installed until the Bolt just touches the barrel breech face, and then reduce by .001"
Also used to Adjust to Varying Rim Thicknesses for your Favority Match Target Ammo

Sold in paks of 4 or 5 to check and adjust bolt to barrel fit.

TECH TIP: Anschutz Bolt Shim Targets ~ Clay from Vancouver Island

Clay shares his Targets and Details with TriggerShims;

I've shot my Anschutz 1712 in smallbore silhouette for many years. It has probably over 300,000 rounds through it and for a while now I've been feeling like it hasn't been shooting quite as well as it used to. I normally feed it better than Federal bulk stuff, but I figured it was probably still a decent test to see what happened with it when going through the various shim thicknesses. The Federal stuff was on sale, and I wanted to test with rather large sample sizes to reduce error as much as possible. I decided to test 50-shot groups at 77 metres, which is turkey distance in that game, the third-furthest but hardest to hit target. Here is how it did before installing a shim and the results with the shims. I've included pictures of the groups..... (Continued Below)

  • MR = mean radius
  • No Shim: MR of 0.496 MOA, avg 1172 fps, SD 22.9, ES 106
  • 0.0015" shim: MR of 0.476 MOA, avg 1174 fps, SD 24.3, ES 118
  • 0.002" shim: MR of 0.469 MOA, avg 1167 fps, SD 23.5, ES 111
  • 0.003" shim: MR of 0.433 MOA, avg 1174 fps, SD 18.6, ES 90
  • 0.004" shim: MR of 0.404 MOA, avg 1173 fps, SD 20.1, ES 110
  • 0.005" shim: MR of 0.472 MOA, avg 1172 fps, SD 22.9, ES 102

    Clay Continues;

    As this Federal bulk ammo shot before putting any shims in I would say it is not something I would consider using to shoot silhouette matches. The dispersion was just too great to have any confidence in it. It is pretty cheap ammo, so this is expected. I'll usually shoot Eley or Lapua/SK's lower end stuff for matches because it is much more reliable, shooting groups that are much better on average. I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised to see an 18.5% improvement here with the Federal and the 0.004" shim. The first couple of shims didn't seem to be enough for the amount of excess headspace that the rifle has after all the use it has seen. They showed very minor improvement, but not much to write home about. The third one looked a little better, but the fourth really smartened things up quite a bit. With the thickest one it actually started going off again, and it was showing some noticeable resistance when closing the bolt. I was surprised the 0.003" shim's group wasn't the best of the bunch, given it had the best SD. Oh well. Not the most consistent ammo anyway, hehe. I stepped backward to the 0.004" shim again and that'll be staying in the gun now. I'm curious to see how it will affect the Eley and Lapua/SK stuff now.
    Thanks for the shims! Seems to have smartened the rifle back up.

    LANCE'S TECH TIP:
    Rimfire Bolt Shim Installation
    ~ A General Guide ~

    Rimmed Cartridges use the thickness of the cartridge rim for head-spacing .22 Rimfires Headspace on the Case Rim, and the actual head space is in the recessed face of the bolt.
    You should first measure the depth of your bolt face pocket to insure it meets SAAMI minimum depth.
    Shimming between the two bolt halves ensures the bolt is up gently tight against the breech.
    You can use our color coded numbered shims like a gauge to find the when the bolt face touches the barrel breech face, and then calculate where you want to be with your bolt headspace depth and rim thickness measurements.
    I cannot tell you which shim best works with your rifle, you decide that yourself by fitting and feel and by shooting.
    Installing Bolt Shims requires fitting by hand, and checking with the Bolt installed in the Rifle, and Locked Down - you do not measure with the Bolt out of the Rifle.
    To establish the Bolt/Breech fit, shims are installed and fitted on an empty chamber.
    If possible it may give you a better feel if you leave the extractors off some rifles while fitting shims.
    Start with a 4 or 5 Pak of shims, install the .0015" or .002" thinnest shim and see how your bolt closes, if it seems to close as normal, then continue to install each thicker shim until the bolt starts to close harder than normal. At the point where your bolt begins to close hard, that was the amount of slack that was in your bolt, measured by whatever shim or shims combined were needed to bring the bolt up tight to the breech. Now it is best to remove that shim, and step back one number, example would be if a .005" Red shim causes the bolt handle to close harder than normal, then take it out and install a .004" Purple.
    If you have to force or put undue stress on your bolt to close it, you should reduce the number of shims. You will generally only use 1 of the 4 or 5 shims in the package, but you can stack shims together if needed. When you have the correct shim installed, your bolt should close normally or just (ever-so) slightly tighter than normal. Put a very small drop of oil on the shim. Now you can go to the range and with the barrel pointed in a safe direction, once again check fit with your favorite ammo.
    Due to variations in rim thickness, you may have to reduce the thickness of shims, remember you have already removed all the excess headspace from the bolt/breech, so now the only thing to do is remove thickness (shims) if / as needed to get to your sweet spot or required headspace for the rim thickness of your favorite cartridge.
    For Longest Shim Life use a drop of oil or a (very small amount of) grease on your shim.
    If you have to force or put undue stress on your bolt to close it, you should reduce the number of shims. A minimum of clearance should be maintained, while maintaining proper headspace. Do not put undue stress on the bolt by shimming too tightly as it is unnecessary!
    At no time do you want to force the bolt to close, did I explain that clearly?
    If you have any question, use a headspace gauge to check for proper headspace.
    Bolt Shims have in many instances cured light strikes. Will they help with Accuracy? Don't take my word for it, Read our Customer Reviews or ask our Customers

    Just a friendly note on the bolt shims I purchased and installed. My 5 shot group went from dime size at 50 yds to everyone touching and not being able to count individual holes.
    Thank You for a Great Product ~ Riley in WV

    Unsolicited Testimonial:
    Lance, I simply wanted to say thank you for providing Bolt Shims. My first one installed was on my Bergara B-14 22 Trainer. I won the club season matches in 2022. It's more accurate now than my winning season. After seeing an improvement, in an already accurate rifle, I've shimmed my Bergara Shooting Rimfire barreled action, two CZ 457, my 2020 Springfield, and my my 54 Annie. The Anschutz allowed for 5th place in the IR 50/50 factory class last year. I shimmed it yesterday. The common fliers were less frequent and overall consistency was improved. A noticeable improvement was seen in all the rifles.
    Thanks again for offering a great product ~ Rob in NC
