~ Cylinder Endshake Tech Tip ~

TECH TIP: ENDSHAKE

Barrel-Cylinder Gap and Endshake

The gap between the back of the barrel and the front of the cylinder is known as the Barrel-Cylinder (B-C) gap. The Front-To-Back Movement of the Cylinder is the Endshake.
In order to properly measure these clearances you will need a Feeler Gauge Set. K-D Tools USA Made # 161 Deluxe Feeler Gauge is available all over the internet and at most good auto parts stores for under $10
To check B-C gap, hold the cylinder rearward and insert the (thickest that will fit) feeler between the Barrel and the Cylinder, this is your Barrel-Cylinder Gap, write it down, it should be between .004" and .008" but some sources say as much as .010" or .012" is acceptable.
Next, hold the cylinder forward and re-check the gap, write it down.
There may be no clearance here at all, the cylinder may touch.
The difference between the two numbers is the amount of movement or Endshake your cylinder has, it should be between .002" and .004" on most Ruger Double Action Revolvers, other manufacturers clearances may vary.
Our Cylinder and Yoke Shims can be used to adjust your B-C Gap and Endshake.

Shims can be ordered to suit your needs from .0015" to .007" or you can order an assortment of thin shims and stack together as needed.

Cylinder Shims will move the Cylinder Back, or Rearward, ending
Barrel to Cylinder Contact and/or Rubbing, and give better Hammer Strikes,
and can cure light strikes if caused by Excessive Endshake
Excessive Endshake is more harmful than a slightly wide barrel gap
A Barrel to Cylinder that is dragging or rubbing can also cause problems with Double Action Trigger Pull.

Crane or Yoke Shims will move the Cylinder Forward, to compensate for wear
at the Yoke/Crane - Frame area.
There is no way to move the Cylinder Forward without moving it Away from the Firing Pin, and Increasing Headspace. You can adjust it forward slightly with yoke shims, but in my opinion but that needs to be for wear, or fit issues, not to try to close wide B/C gap

Barrel to Cylinder Gap
Barrel to Cylinder Gap is a constant, when the gun is fired the cylinder is forced back just as it is when you hold the cylinder back to measure B/C gap. Cylinder Shims do NOT change or increase the B/C gap, they only limit the fore/aft movement (Endshake) of the cylinder during firing which decreases wear.
You will have the same B/C Gap both before and after installing Cylinder Shims, only the Endshake will be reduced.

Note About Zero Endshake:
Make sure you have some endshake, I recommend no less than .001" when using very thin shims.
Some Experts call for Near Zero Endshake, but - without a minimum of endshake you could bind-up and damage a very thin shim.
So-Called "Zero Endshake" is for repairs made by stretching the crane, not for delicate shims.

TECH NOTES: Single Action Cylinder Shims

Cylinder Shims are nothing more than very thin washers, when installed they will limit the endshake or cylinder hammering.
They are loose, inserted between the cylinder and frame and are held with the cylinder pin.
When you remove the cylinder, they too come out, and you have to re-install them each time, you will have to keep track of them when you disassemble for cleaning. Best to find what thickness you need, and order that size so you don't have a stack of shims to keep track of

If you need a shim for a model not listed:

First, I would contact the manufacturer to ask if they supply cylinder shims,
some companies do, although they usually are somewhat expensive.

If not, if it is a Double Action, you would need to determine where to place the Shim.

Some are like the Taurus or Dan Wesson and install below the Front Cylinder Bushing,
so you would measure the ID and OD of the Front Cylinder Bushing.
Some are like a Single Action Revolver and can be installed at the Front of the Cylinder,
to bear between the Cylinder and the Yoke Frame
Others are like the S&W and are installed at the Rear End of the Yoke Shaft, in the bottom of the Cylinder, effectively lengthening the Yoke Shaft.
In any case, if you can supply me with an accurate measurement of the shaft, cylinder ID,
yoke shaft ID/OD and a picture of what you are doing, I may be able to help you
find a shim from or current inventory or possibly make tooling to fit your request.

I had a couple of S&W's with really tight B/C gaps - an early 28 that I just picked up with B/C gap between 0.002 and 0.004 (due to a slightly non-concentric cylinder face), and a 686 that I’ve had for a while that had some custom work done with a gap of just under 0.004. A bit of end-shake was enough to cause a bit of B/C interference on both. The 0.002 did the job on the 28, and the 0.003 solved the 686. I couldn’t be happier.
